Abstract

Although referred to Ulysses, the phrase ille referre aliter saepe solebat ídem (Ars II 128) has been and is rightly considered a metapoetic statement with which Ovid refers to his own writing. This verse is analyzed in its context in order to demonstrate that it is a performative statement which implies that the differentiated repetition of the same thing is actualized in each and every one of the planes of the passage that contains it.
