Abstract

We will attempt to analyse ‘The Legend of Dido’, included in The Legend of Good Women by briefly referring to the two classical sources cited in the text–The Aeneid and Heroides VII. We will then focus on how these two hypotexts contribute to the plurality of voices in the text, together with those of the narrator and the characters. We will argue that the effect of this is a growing difficulty to arrive at a straightforward interpretation of the legend, in a decisive move towards what would happen in the Canterbury Tales.
