Abstract

We analyze a controversial text of De rerum natura (DRN) by Lucretius (V, 1161-1240). In it he wonders how the idea of ”‹”‹God arose among the primitives by offering two etiologies: A legitimate one (vv. 1169-1182), which states that it was through religious apparitions in dreams. And another not legitimate, the astral religiosity (1183-1240). The disqualification of this has been generalized by many editors throughout the text. We will not argue esoterically, or Freudian, or philosophically, we only record the autonomy of the first etiology through syntax of the text and the use of epicurean sources including the Herculaneum papyri.
