Abstract

The term "barbarian" goes through a long development that is marked by changing antinomies. It begins with the classic opposition "Hellene-barbarian", followed by "Reman-barbarian", and contributed to the rise of new antinomíes, like "Christian-pagan", and "civilized-barbarian", How have these continuous metamorphoses been possible, starting in Greco-Roman times, reshaping themselves in the Middle and Modern ages, and still appearing in these days? They are made possible because the "barbarian" is, aboye all, "the Other", whatever the characteristics he may have. In this history of the invention of "the Other", I am discussing the contribution of Roman culture to this construction, with a focus on De Bello Gallico of Julius Caesar
