Abstract

Many allegorical or symbolic images are frequently used by Sedulius in Carmen Paschale in order to interpret certain biblical episodes. In this paper we study the use and function of allegory in Carmen Paschale and in its prose version, Opus Paschale. We pay special attention to those Carmen Paschale passages related to number symbolism, namely; the three gifts of The Three Wise Men, the four arms of the Cross where Christ was crucified, the four Evangelists and the Twelve Apostles
