Abstract

In 1755 the Aprilis Diaiogus, written by Vicente López, is published as a form of preface to the Bibliotheca Mexicana of Juan José de Eguiara y Eguren. The dialogue offers an explicit contribution to the literary defense of the intellectual value of criollos. It is characterized by the strong presence of classical tradition represented by the use of dialogue, quotations, rhetorical figures and the literary topic of locus amoenus. The text, which establishes Mexico City as the locus amoenus for erudition, through one of its digressions, is a contribution to the process of constructing a space of authority composed of elements belonging to classical and American culture
