Abstract

To Argentina, the 19th century is not only foundational of a literary translation tradition but it is also profuse in reflections on translational praxis. Between 1899 and 1900, Matí­as Calandrelli introduces the controversy about the versions of Horace and the very teaching of Latin in the Journal of Law, History and Literature. The analysis focuses on the assessment of dispute as a generator of translation studies, the performative character of periodicals that operate in the construction of a pedagogical and discipline knowledge of the Latin language, and likewise, the re-signifying of the classical tradition in the literate field
