Abstract

The battlefield scene after the confrontation between Caesareans and Pompeians in book VII of Lucan’s Bellum Ciuile (786-846) makes explicit a refunctionalization of the traditional ‘day after battle’ topos. From a stylistic perspective I show that the intersection of historiographic, epic and tragic codes, and the manipulation of some literary and cultural motifs in that episode can be read as one of the chief mechanisms of Lucanian poetics of ciuile nefas.
