Vestaque mater: divinidades domésticas en Virgilio

Abstract

The goddess Vesta and the related domestic deities the Lares and the Penates are key divine figures in Virgil’s Aeneid. Close consideration of all the passages in which these divine figures are cited will reveal a deliberate progression of images that reflects the poet’s abiding concern with the question of Roman identity, especially as relates to the blending of Trojan and Italian elements in the new settlement in Latium.
